I bet the Guinness flows like fucking water when CHEAP FREAKS deliver their superb fuzzed-out garage jams to unsuspecting bar patrons around Dublin. Second release from this Irish quartet and it’s definitely a winner. Four trashy rock ‘n’ roll stompers sure to make denim-clad punks bounce off the walls and spill stout everywhere. Top-notch production, a bit dirty without sacrificing intensity or stepping on the singer’s vocals. Sounds like they dig the MONKS just as much as the REATARDS. An LP is set to be released, and if it’s anywhere near as good as this, CHEAP FREAKS will be huge in a couple months.

Friday, September 10, 2010 Cheap Freaks "Play Four Songs" (Big Neck) Ridiculously potent 60s-ish/70s-ish garage punk from Dublin that's doublin' my pleasure by being twice as good as anything else I've heard this week. Genuinely good garage rock is hard to describe in words other than to say, this record gets it totally right. Freakin' awesome!

Cheap Freaks – Play Four Songs Speaking of garage fuzz, the Cheap Freaks come along right on cue. Coming from Dublin, the Cheap Freaks add a touch of quasi-psychedelia, a la the 13th Floor Elevators to their sonic attack. “Caesar the deceiver” tosses some odd guitar touches into the guttural pulp mix and a hefty dose of “Hurly Burly” chops. 1984 rocks with a caveman-pounding-his-mate intensity. “Nowhere to Go,” revs up the speed-inhalation with a nasty dose of poppers, whiskey and cheap wine. Guitars go in furious circles while the vocals chop through the fuzz. “Something Wrong,” sounds like an outtake from some 1960’s beach movie on really bad speed and acid. It’s all enough to give Annette Funicello hives. Total lo-fi, garage slop noise. It’s punky. It’s fuzzed. Of course it’s from Big Neck Records. A definite hit for the like minded. Call me one.

Sleazegrinder Review

Centred round half of Dublin four-piece The Things, who seem to have gone the way of asbestos garages since reviewed in these hallowed dark spaces, these leak out from a similar vein but infuse a more soulful destitution than their previus outfits farfisa-fi-fi-finery. After yours stuly started it off at the wrong speed & almost succumbing to the Vanilla Fudge fumage it hits with a psychogarage stomp of slack-jawed but inspiredly wired intensity with Caesar The Deceiver discarding some superbly sparkly & dypsodelic dysfunctional guitar grunk, 1984 is a trash-can blue moon rattler while Nowhere To Go careens cross city boundaries with kerbstones as plectrums chauffering Chuck Berry to hustle The Heartbreakers territory for some payback. Closer Something Wrong laces lacerated Southside, almost Sylvain-ian soul & Mink Deville swagger into the spirited mix for a walk on the window ledge of the psychward - a tumultuous conclusion full of gloriously gruesome guitar gristle & vocal caterwauling. Grab your warder by the cuffs.

If it wasn't for the Gallagher's/Oasis i would never have even picked up playing the guitar. AND! Wichtig ist zwar aufm Platz, aber was live knallt, geht auf Platte genauso gut. Auf der Bühne sind diese fünf Briten ein echtes Erlebnis und das Niveau können sie auch bei den vier Songs dieser Demo-CD erhalten.

Wer auf wilden, rauhen Sixties-Garagenpunk im Stil der SONICS oder NOMADS steht, sollte sich die Freaks schnell auf seine „Unbedingt anhören“-Liste kritzeln, denn hier passt alles. Der Sound klingt wie live eingespielt, die obligatorische Orgel setzt die nötigen Akzente, ohne zu nerven, und auch Sänger Bob heult voller Inbrunst, was die Stimmbänder hergeben.

Für eine ganze LP würde ich doch glatt meine letzten Arbeitslosenkohlen hergeben.

We'll be playing this Friday night (16th) with the wonderful Kid Karate at Crawadaddy, shaping up to be a great night! After that we hit the studio for a few days to put the finishing touches on our rekid. Hope to have some tracks from that up on our myspace/facebook etc etc in the next few weeks. We play next Thursday (22nd) in the new Captain America's in Blanchardstown so for those of you in that neck of the woods we hope you can make it along!

Just a few bits of news to report to ya'll. First off we play a live show this Saturday afternoon at Jack Wills clothing store on Harry Street in Dublin. Its free in and it kicks off at 3pm sharp so come along if your out and about town during the day on saturday...

Second off we play our first headline show in quite a while next Saturday the 3rd of July. Support on the night comes from Guilty Optics and Scheme Soul Vision. Would be great to see ya'll there also!

After that we head back in the studio to put the finishing touches on our album. We've 20 songs recorded now, some from session in Berlin last year but most from a recent session we done here in Dublin. All is sounding pretty sweet! We hope to release an EP first off and follow with the album pretty soon after. More news on all that jazz to come in a few weeks.

Germany / EPeeezzz

We are setting off on a short tour of Germany next week and taking the cities of Aachen, Kiel, Berlin and Koln. Along with a DJ slot at White Trash we'll also be doing a radio interview on Motor FM during our stay in Berlin. Think its a pre-recorded show so we'll give you details of its broadcast when we get any news on it...

Also some of you may have noticed that our latest 7" from Big Neck Records has yet to go on sale. This is due to some delays the label have had at the pressing plant but we've been told it will be available to buy from March. So watch this space! :-()

We'll be following this release with another 7" on Psycho Sound Records. The EP is ready to go so we hope to have it out by May. It will be available online direct from Psycho Sounds myspace and our own page.

We've put together a limited edition tour CD with some of the tracks from the Psycho Sound Records EP. They'll be available from our merch stand next week...

Last shows of the year!

We'll be playing our last 3 shows of the year next month, first in Dublins at Dead Chickens in Twisted Pepper with the might Box Elders on December 5th, we also play Sandinos in Derry on the 6th with the Elders. Our last show will happen on the 11th of December at De Cellar Bar in Balbriggan with House of Dolls.

After that we'll be taking a slight break to put the finishing touches on our album and some other releases we've got planned.

Back in business!

We've got our first show in over a month coming up next Thursday 17th of September at a club night in Galway called Substance at Kelly's bar. We'll be playing the show as a four piece as Vinny will be off vacationing in sunny Spain with his lady friend. So hope ya'll can make it down to the show.

We follow Galway with yet another 4 piece show in Dublin at the launch of my new club night Dead Chickens in Twisted Pepper... We'll be playing with Brothers Movement, Wounds and Git & the Tracksuits. Show starts at 11pm but you should all head down to the early show in Twisted Pepper that night to check out House of Dolls and friends. You'll gain entry to Dead Chickens for free if you do so...

Berlin / EP / Album

First of all thanks to all for coming down to Psycho Fest last Saturday, twas great day indeed!

In other news we are off to Berlin this Friday for 8 days. First we play our debut German show at White Trash on Sat 20.06.09. Many thanks to Artfink! for the wonderful poster.

We then head to Der Schaltraum Studio in East Berlin for 5 days recording in which time we plan to record our debut album. We've short listed about 17 of 22 songs to record next week. Hoping we can maybe get the album out before xmas...

EP: Our debut EP has been shipped off for pressing so we should have an official release date pretty soon...The 7" will be availble from Big Neck Records and a limited run of CDs will be available from our own Psycho Sound Records aswell as your usual itunes and all that download shite...

Few bits'n'blogs to report. First and foremost I suppose we may aswell introduce ourselves good'n'proper. Cheap Freaks came about when myself (Bob) and Magic Al Dodd got together for a jam to work on some idea's we had away from our respected bands The Things/Real Junk (me!) and DC Pakt (Al). After some months of shite going on with the Things we decided to go full time with the Freaks.

Post debut shows: We have been spending a lot of time in our studio trying to stop our demo's from getting so noizy but no such luck! So i think we are just gonna release them as they are...

We hope to release a 4 track 7" EP of all this shite real soon on Big Neck Records.

Also we are off to Berlin on the 20th of June for a weeks recording with the wonderful Tom Schwoll. We are looking to bang our about 20 songs that week withthe view to putting together our debut album...

Oh and we play Toners Pub on Baggot Street Dublin on 11.04.09..

Come join us at our debut performance this coming Valentines Day, Sat 14th Feb with the ever so Mighty Stef for his album launch show at Crawdaddy. We're on stage bout 8.30pm...

Following that show we'll be at Electric Avenue, Waterford on the 20th for Psych Fest, aswell as support shows to the 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster at Crawdaddy on the 27th and The Brothers Movement at Eamonn Dorans on the 6th of March...
